At The Mill Castlemaine we’re big on sustainability – and it’s an underpinning value of the businesses that are based here. Each business does what they can to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

We spoke with Christiana at Mimosa Botanicals, an old-world apothecary studio that specialises in creating luxurious bath soaks, artisanal apothecary goods, and botanical perfumes that embody the essence of nature’s finest offerings.

‘We don’t use any synthetic ingredients in our formulas, only natural and sustainability sourced essential oils – some direct from the grower/distiller. We source our Australian Sandalwood essential oil from a 50% indigenous owned company in Western Australia called Dutjahn and our organic Lavender oil direct from a family run farm/distiller in the South of France.

We use Australian-sourced and organic ingredients where possible in our formulas, including clays, sea salt, select essential oils, local Nuggetty Creek olive oil in our soaps, base oils for our skin care, local Maldon honey, locally picked and dried botanicals for our bath soaks… just to name a few.’

As for packaging, Christina explains ‘We offer refill bags online for our French Apothecary Bath Soak so customers can re-use the pretty bottles over and over.

For online orders that are posted we mainly use recycled kraft boxes, honeycomb wrap and recycled paper or Heaps Good compostable shipping bags wherever we can!

Wholesale orders are packed in recycled boxes from a local Castlemaine business alongside honeycomb wrap and compostable corn bio fill (re-used from when we order in our own supplies and materials)

Locals are always welcome to contact Mimosa and get any of their essential oils, perfume oils, natural perfumes refilled in the apothecary. Suggestions for how this can be done for long distance customers are welcome!
